Today, cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States and its incidence has risen dramatically over the last 50 years. This leads scientists to the conclusion that our lifestyle and environment must play an important role in whether or not we develop cancer. There is still much more to learn about the factors that influence cancer development, but in the meantime, we should take to heart the things that we know cause cancer, and those that we believe can prevent it. Here are some things you can do to reduce your risk. The first is eating a healthy diet, rich in fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are rich in anti-oxidants, which can prevent cancer and other diseases. Anti-oxidants are very effective at combating free radicals that are

created in our bodies as we process food. We cant stop these free radicals from occurring, but we can combat them with anti-oxidants. If we dont combat them they cause damage to our cells and DNA, and this is what leads to premature aging and disease. If you want to significantly increase the anti-oxidant level in your diet, pay special attention to the foods that can give you the most value. Get your fair share of artichokes, red beans, blueberries, pomegranates, tomatoes and green tea. Yes, thats right green tea. In fact, in terms of dietary changes to help prevent cancer, green tea may be the very best thing you can add to your diet. There has been much research in recent years on the effects green tea has in preventing, and even treating cancer. Many studies have shown that green teas anti-oxidant power can be a powerful preventative against cancer. Not only is this suggested by the significantly lower cancer rate in Asian countries where green t ea is widely consumed, but many studies have supported this theory. In 1999, the Alternative Medicine Review reported that green tea appears to affect cancer in many ways. First, it is a powerful free radical scavenger, and destroys more free radicals than many other forms of anti-oxidants. Secondly, green tea seems to have the power to inhibit the growth of abnormal cells, many of which might have started as, or turned into cancer cells. Green tea also appears to be a very strong detoxifying agent, helping to rid the body of potentially harmful substances. Finally, the

Alternative Medicine Review reported that green tea inhibits the growth of cancer cells. Therefore, even in patients who have already been diagnosed with cancer, green tea may be helpful, because it may prevent the cancer from spreading. Other studies have also shown that green tea can be an effective adjunct therapy for cancer, not only because it appears to inhibit the spread of cancer, but also because it makes traditional therapies more effective. One study showed that when mice were given green tea in conjunction with chemotherapy, the chemotherapy drugs invaded the cancer cells in higher concentration than when the chemotherapy was administered alone. Another recent study of breast cancer patients in stages one and two showed a significantly lower rate of cancer recurrence when the patients were given large doses of green tea. Making Green Tea Part of Your Life If youd like to add green tea to your diet for its health effects, many doctor s recommend that you start with about three cups per day. Experiment with the many flavors of green tea that are on the market, or stick with the traditional green tea so popular in Asian restaurants. Either will have the health benefits hot or iced. While most American doctors recommend that you begin with 3 cups of green tea per day, you should know that in Asian cultures most people drink significantly more than that. The average in China is 4-5 cups a day, and in Japan its estimated to be as high as 8-10 cups per day. If you dont think you can manage that much tea in a day, there

are green tea extract supplements available at many drug stores and health food stores. One of the great things about using green tea as a preventative treatment is that there are no side effects. Green tea is healthy and safe even to give to your children. Green tea has significantly less caffeine that coffee and even has less caffeine that traditional black tea. So, its well tolerated by nearly everyone. In addition to research showing that green tea helps prevent cancer, there is also evidence to suggest that it reduces your risk of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure and Alzheimers disease. It is also thought to slow down the overall aging process. So, what do you have to lose? It seems there is no downside to drinking green tea and there may be a great many benefits.

The mysteries of cancer have eluded us for years. However, we are beginning to learn many pieces of valuable information about how to prevent many different kinds of cancer. And, of course, once we learn more about how to prevent the disease, we can better understand how to treat it, as well. Research is ongoing, and scientists are learning much about this disease, though there still is much to learn. One form of cancer that plagues many men is prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer found in American men, other than skin cancer. The American Cancer Society estimates that there will be about 234,460 new cases of prostate cancer in the United States in 2006. About 27,350 men will die of this disease. Prostate cancer

is the third leading cause of cancer death in men, after lung cancer and colorectal cancer. While 1 man in 6 will get prostate cancer during his lifetime, only 1 man in 34 will die of this disease. Earlier detection and better treatments are making the death rate for this disease go down. Yet, there is still much work to do to learn the causes of prostate cancer and to develop more reliable treatments. If we can further our research and learn the causes of more types of cancer, including prostate cancer, then we will be well on our way to preventing more incidences of this disease. There have been some promising findings, and it appears that one thing that we can do to prevent prostate cancer is to include green tea in our diet. Weve learned through research that green tea has the ability to prevent many forms of cancer, prostate cancer among them. Studies of Asian culture, where green tea consumption is high and cancer incidences are much lower have le d to the understanding of how green tea can help in this area. One study of particular interest was reported by the UK Tea Council. This study showed that green tea consumption appears to have the ability to act as a sort of scavenger against a substance called Reactive Oxygen Species ROS.* ROS are a form of free radicals that cause cell damage. This particular form of free radical appears to be one that especially contributes to the development of prostate cancer, when it is produced in excess. But, the anti-oxidants contained in green tea

have the particular abilities to get at these free radicals and eradicate them, preventing them from developing into cancer cells. So, it appears that prostate cancer is just one of the many that green tea may have the power to prevent. And, the power appears to be in the anti-oxidants that are found in green tea. Anti- oxidants are important because they combat free radicals, like ROS, in our bodies. These free radicals are created as a by product of converting the food we eat to energy. When free radicals are not kept in check, they damage our cells and DNA. This leads to faster aging and a higher risk of many diseases, including cancer. For this reason, a diet high in anti-oxidants is now believed to be one of the best ways to prevent disease and premature aging. And, green tea, along with certain fruits and vegetables provide some of the most potent sources of these important substances. If youre not already doing so, add pomegranates, blueberr ies, artichokes, tomatoes and asparagus to your diet. These fruits and vegetables have been found to have the most potent anti-oxidants. And, wash it all down with green tea. One great reason that green tea is such a good way to prevent disease and protect health is that it has no side effects, so everyone can use it. Even those who are sensitive to caffeine can usually tolerate green tea quite well. Green tea is far lower in caffeine than coffee or black tea. In addition, the caffeine in green tea doesnt appear to cause a fast heart rate and jitters

the way that many other caffeine containing beverages do. The news about prostate cancer and green tea is important to deliver, particularly to American men. On average, the American man is far more likely to drink coffee than tea. And, when American men do drink tea, they are much more likely to drink black tea. So, we should spread the word to all the men in our lives that green tea is a powerful health protector. So, make green tea part of your healthy lifestyle, particularly if you happen to be a man. Green tea is refreshing and delicious. And, green tea may be a simple and important way to prevent disease and ensure that we live long and healthy lives. So, whether your pleasure is hot or iced, have your cup of green tea today and every day!

High cholesterol is one of the leading precursors to heart disease. And, research has shown that our diet and lifestyle, combined with our genetics determines whether we have healthy or unhealthy cholesterol levels. To keep your cholesterol levels in check and prevent heart disease, there are several measures you can take. The first is diet. Cholesterol in food comes from animal products. Meat, eggs and dairy products are all culprits. Reduce the amount of red meat you consume, replacing it with fish or chicken. Use low fat dairy products and reduce the number of egg yolks you eat, or use egg substitutes. Increase the amount of fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet and eat whole grains rather than refined products like white flour. The second is exercise. Be certain to get at least 30 minutes of exercise most days of the week. This

will help you shed pounds if you need to, and will also help lower your serum cholesterol. Walking is a very good way to help get your daily dose of exercise. In addition to making lifestyle and diet changes, many people take supplements to help control their weight and cholesterol levels. There are many supplements available, but one of the best is something you likely have in your cupboard right now. Its tea particularly green tea. Asian cultures have consumed green tea in large quantities for centuries. And, throughout history they have had fewer problems with obesity and lower incidences of heart disease and many forms of cancer. Scientists are beginning to find a link between this high green tea consumption and better health. Much research has been performed on the ability of green tea to slow down the aging process and prevent illness. The magic potion in tea seems to be its anti-oxidants. Anti-oxidants, which are also found in fruits and v egetables, wine, cocoa and coffee, fight our bodies free radicals. Free radicals are created as a by product of our digestive process. Free radicals, left unchecked, damage our cells and DNA, leading to aging and disease. But, anti-oxidants combat anti-oxidants before they can hurt our bodies. This is why its so important to have anti-oxidants as part of your every day diet. All tea contains anti-oxidants, but green tea retains more of its anti-oxidants in their original, natural state because it goes through less processing than other types of tea. In particular, green teas anti-oxidants have been shown to be effective at reducing cholesterol levels and helping with weight loss. Tea prevents the oxidation of LDL cholesterol into

plaque, the hard substance that clogs our arteries, making us more susceptible to heart attacks and strokes. Studies have suggested that even if your LDL cholesterol level is high, drinking tea may prevent it from causing a problem. Tea is also thought to have an anti-inflammatory effect, which helps the heart in its overall function. In addition, green tea seems to have the ability to help patients lose weight. For overweight patients, losing weight usually means an automatic reduction in cholesterol levels. So, tea has a two fold effect for overweight patients with high cholesterol! In terms of weight loss, it appears that the combination of the anti-oxidants in green tea and the caffeine speeds up the metabolism and promotes the oxidation of fat. Both of these attributes contribute to weight loss. In recent years, there have been several studies on green teas ability to speed weight loss. One of the most interesting studies was conducted by Osaka University in Japan. This study evaluated 98 men and 97 women, between the ages of 22 and 65. All subjects were healthy, though some were moderately overweight. The participants were divided into 3 groups. The first group received a placebo drink, the second group a green tea drink with a low dose of tea catechins anti-oxidants and the third group a green tea drink with a high dose of tea catechins. The study was conducted over a 12 week period, during which time participants consumed their study beverage three times a day at meals. At the end of the twelve week period, participants who received the green tea beverages had lost weight and reduced their body fat and BMI, unlike the group who consumed the placebo drink.

The group with the higher dosage of tea catechins reported more success than the low dose group. This study concludes the way countless others have in recent years: with the suggestion, at least, that drinking green tea can help you lose weight. And, losing weight can help you lower your cholesterol. In addition, other studies have shown that green tea may help lower cholesterol levels even in subjects who did not lose weight. So, drinking green tea may provide double the results for those patients seeking to lose weight and lower cholesterol levels. Adding green tea to your diet, along with making dietary changes and getting the recommended amount of exercise each week may be all you need to get your cholesterol and your weight under control. * http://jhs.pharm.or.jp/512/51_161.pdf

“Has America become a nation of psychotics? You would think so, based on the explosion in the use of antipsychotic medications. In 2008, with over $14 billion in sales, antipsychotics became the single top-selling therapeutic class of prescription drugs in the United States, surpassing drugs used to treat high cholesterol and acid reflux. Once upon a time, antipsychotics were reserved for a relatively small number of patients with hard-core psychiatric diagnoses – primarily schizophrenia and bipolar disorder – to treat such symptoms as delusions, hallucinations, or formal thought disorder. Today, it seems, everyone is taking antipsychotics. Parents are told that their unruly kids are in fact bipolar, and in need of anti-psychotics, while old people with dementia are dosed, in large numbers, with drugs once reserved largely for schizophrenics. Americans with symptoms ranging from chronic depression to anxiety to insomnia are now being prescribed anti-psychotics at rates that seem to indicate a national mass psychosis.”

One of the most important discoveries resulting from the many years of cancer research is the indication that there may be several natural ways to prevent cancer. Learning how we might prevent cancer could be the most important tool in eradicating this disease. Determining cancer prevention techniques has been difficult in many cases, because we dontmt know what causes many types of cancer. However, there are many forms of cancer that are partly, or completely, preventable. For example, we know that the vast majority of those who suffer from lung cancer are smokers. And, a large percentage of skin cancer is caused by over exposure to the sun and lack of sun protection. If we can further our research and learn the causes of more types of cancer, then we will be well on our way to preventing many incidences of this disease. There have been some promising findings,

and it appears that one thing that we can do to prevent many different types of cancer is drink green tea. Researchers began looking at green teatms properties because of the vast differences in health concerns between Asian cultures and our own. While more Asians than Americans are smokers, they have a far lower incidence of heart disease and lung cancer the two diseases most likely to affect smokers. In addition, Asians have a lower incidence of cancer, heart disease and stroke over all than Americans. And, Asians drink, on average, four cups of green tea each day. There is very promising news about the possibilities that green tea can help prevent disease. Green tea is loaded with some of the most powerful anti-oxidants around, and we know that anti-oxidants are one of the most important keys to preventing cancer and many other diseases that plague us. Anti- oxidants are important because they combat free radicals in our bodies. These free radicals are created as a by product of converting the food we eat to energy. If they are not kept in check, they wreak havoc on our bodies by damaging our cells and DNA. This leads to faster aging and a higher risk of many diseases, including cancer, heart disease and stroke. They even make us look older. So, to prevent your risk of disease, doctors recommend that you have a diet high in anti-oxidants. And, not all anti-oxidants are created equal. Ittms helpful to eat the foods that contain the most potent anti-oxidants. This includes pomegranates, tomatoes and blueberries. And, it also includes drinking green tea each day. There have been many studies that link green tea with cancer prevention. One of the most interesting articles available on the subject was published

by the University Hospitals of Cleveland. This article outlines in detail the findings of many studies that lead to the conclusion that green tea is effective at preventing many forms of cancer. Green tea has been shown to be effective at protecting against many types of cancers when it becomes part of everyday life. It has shown promise in preventing colon cancer, breast cancer, pancreatic cancer, lung cancer, liver cancer and stomach cancer. Most of these studies have been conducted on mice in laboratories or in vitro. And while, to be sure, we need to test the findings on humans, the indications are promising. And, to date, several human trials have begun. Of course, in the case of proving that green tea can prevent cancer, studies on humans would need to last for years to be conclusive. There have also been some studies that indicate that green tea may even be effective at treating patients who already have cancer. Several studies have shown th at traditional chemotherapy drugs were more effective when the patient was consuming green tea regularly during the months receiving treatment. In addition to studies that indicate green teatms effectiveness in preventing cancer when added to the diet, there is also indication that it may be effective at preventing and treating skin cancer when applied topically. Several studies have been conducted that have led to more research to be done on humans. Ittms highly likely that youtmll see green tea extract added to your favorite sunscreen and skin care products in the future. Green tea holds such wonderful possibilities, in part because it has no side effects. Even if green tea proves not to be effective at preventing or treating cancer, it is healthy and you can consume

as much as you want without fear. Another reason that green tea could hold so much promise is that ittms inexpensive. Adding green tea to your diet is a simple and cost effective way to protect your health. It is widely available and affordable to the masses. So, drink up! Green tea is good for you we know that. And, ittms likely that ittms even better for you than you imagined. A cup or two of green tea each day may be the key to protecting your health for years to come!

Anti-oxidants are very effective at combating free radicals that are created in our bodies as we process food. We cant stop these free radicals

from occurring, but we can combat them with anti-oxidants. Not only is this suggested by the significantly lower cancer rate in Asian countries where green tea is widely consumed, but many studies have supported this theory. Finally, the Alternative Medicine Review reported that green tea inhibits the growth of cancer cells.

Making Green Tea Part of Your Life If youd like to add green tea to your diet for its health effects, many doctors recommend that you start with about three cups per day. If you dont think you can manage that much tea in a day, there are green tea extract supplements available at many drug stores and health food stores. One of the great things about using green tea as a preventative treatment is that there are no side effects. Green tea is healthy and safe even to give to your children. Green tea has significantly less caffeine that coffee and even has less caffeine that traditional black tea. So, its well tolerated

by nearly everyone.
